چکیده

Studies on the process of nitrite reduction by cell-free extracts of denitrifying bacteria could materially contribute to our knowledge of its mechanism. Such investigations have so far been limited to those of Yamagata (1) with Bacillus pyocyaneus (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and of Robinson et al. (‘2) with Micrococcus haZodenitri$cans. Neither of these authors has examined the products of the reaction; Yamagata merely determined that nitrite disappeared under the influence of his preparations, while Robinson et al. observed production of a gas, which was assumed to be nitrogen. In the present investigation it has been found that cell-free extracts of two denitrifying bacteria, Pseudomonas stutzeri and a Bacillus subtilis strain, reduce nitrite to a mixture of gaseous products, consisting principally of nitrogen but also containing appreciable quantities of nitrous and nitric oxides. A preliminary account of this work was reported earlier (3).

Nitrifying and denitrifying pathways of methanotrophic bacteria.

Nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting molecule, continues to accumulate in the atmosphere as a product of anthropogenic activities and land-use change. Nitrogen oxides are intermediates of nitrification and denitrification and are released as terminal products under conditions such as high nitrogen load and low oxygen tension among other factors. The rapid completion and pu...

Production and utilization of nitrous oxide by Pseudomonas denitrificans.

Nitrous oxide has been recognized as a product of denitrifying organisms since the early work of Gayon and Dupetit (1882a, b; 1886). Under some conditions it can be the major initial product (Wijler and Delwiche, 1954). Kluyver and Verhoeven (1954) have investigated the production of nitrous oxide by a large number of denitrifiers and conclude that its production and utilization is characterist...

Fungal denitrification and nitric oxide reductase cytochrome P450nor.

We have shown that many fungi (eukaryotes) exhibit distinct denitrifying activities, although occurrence of denitrification was previously thought to be restricted to bacteria (prokaryotes), and have characterized the fungal denitrification system. It comprises NirK (copper-containing nitrite reductase) and P450nor (a cytochrome P450 nitric oxide (NO) reductase (Nor)) to reduce nitrite to nitro...
